It has been shown to be an effective antioxidant partly because of the stability of its thione form which predominates at physiological pH(2) , making it resistant to autoxidation. ERGO can scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and thereby mitigate oxidative damage to biological molecules that contribute to chronic human diseases
